FDA has approved new Drug Arnuity Ellipta for treatment of Asthma

US FDA has approved Arnuity Ellipta with the active component fluticasone furoate for the treatment of asthma in patients aged 12 years and older in August 2014. Asthma is a long term disease which has no proper cure. The main emphasis for asthma treatment is provided for the control of the disease. Asthma is treated with two types of medicines, The first groups of medicines are for long term control and the second group of medicines are for quick relief from the asthma attack. This drug is suggested to be used for maintenance treatment of asthma as prophylactic therapy. However it is not indicated for the treatment and relief of acute bronchospasm.

The drug Arnuity Ellipta  is available  as powder for oral inhalation. This drug has to be administered as 1 inhalation once daily by the orally inhaled route. It is recommended to be used at the same time every day and should not be used more than 1 time every 24 hrs. Most common adverse reactions of this drug are  upper respiratory tract infection, nasopharyngitis, headache, and bronchitis etc.

The initial treatment dose for the drug is determined by the patients severity of the condition. The patients who are not taking an inhaled corticosteroid the initial treatment starting dose is 100 MCG. The starting dose for other patients should be based on the severity of the disease as well as nature of the previous asthma therapy. Patients who fail to response with 100 mcg treatment for 2 weeks  could be treated with a higher dose of the drug i.e. 200 mcg of Arnuity Ellipta. But the recommended highest dose is 200 mcg and should not be exceeded. This inhaler is expected to provide great relief for the asthma patients.
